Friend of Moda Sarah Huechteman walks you through the construction of Flight Path in the step-by-step video tutorial embedded below. Follow along as she shares helpful piecing tips, pressing suggestions, and ideas for keeping your points sharp.

Cutting and Preparation

Corey’s design uses flying geese units and half-square triangles in two different colorways. You’ll start by cutting your background and print fabrics according to the pattern instructions. Sarah recommends starching your fabrics before cutting to help keep edges crisp and prevent stretching.

Assembling the Flying Geese

Sarah demonstrates her preferred method for making flying geese using the stitch-and-flip technique. You’ll:

  • Place a small square of print fabric on a larger background rectangle, right sides together.
  • Stitch along the drawn diagonal line.
  • Trim ¼" away from the seam and press the corner open.
  • Repeat on the other side to complete the unit.

She also shares a tip for chaining multiple units through the machine to save time.

Trimming Makes Perfect!

Trimming is the key to getting precise blocks, and Sarah shares her tips for trimming these flying geese units in her tutorial video. The biggest takeaway? Don't be put off by the trim size -- as Sarah reminds us, "It's just a line on your ruler!" She'll show you how to mark your rulers to make trimming even easier.

Block Assembly

Arrange your flying geese according to the block diagram, keeping an eye on directional prints so they all “fly” the same way. Sarah suggests laying everything out before sewing rows together to catch any misplaced units. Sew rows, press as instructed in the pattern, and then join them to complete your block.
